The Holy Anointing Oil

The holy anointing oil described in Exodus 30:22-25 was created from 500 shekels  (about 6 kg) of myrrh, half as much (about 3 kg) of fragrant cinnamon, 250  shekels (about 3 kg) of fragrant cane (kanabos, variously translated as calamus or cannabis), 500 shekels (about 6kg) of cassia, and a hin (about 4 L) of  olive oil.

The oil was used to anoint the vessels of the Tabernacle 30:26 and the High Priest, and is traditionally regarded as the oil used by prophets to anoint Saul, David, and other kings of ancient Israel.

Exodus 30:22-33New Living Translation (NLT)

The Anointing Oil 22 Then the Lord said to Moses, 23 “Collect choice spices—12 1⁄2 pounds of pure myrrh, 6 1⁄4 pounds of fragrant cinnamon, 6 1⁄4 pounds of fragrant calamus,[a] 24 and 12 1⁄2 pounds of cassia[b]—as measured by the weight of the sanctuary shekel. Also get one gallon of olive oil.[c] 25 Like a skilled incense maker, blend these ingredients to make a holy anointing oil. 26 Use this sacred oil to anoint the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant, 27 the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and all its accessories, the incense altar, 28 the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the washbasin with its stand. 29 Consecrate them to make them absolutely holy. After this, whatever touches them will also become holy.

30 “Anoint Aaron and his sons also, consecrating them to serve me as priests. 31 And say to the people of Israel, ‘This holy anointing oil is reserved for me from generation to generation. 32 It must never be used to anoint anyone else, and you must never make any blend like it for yourselves. It is holy, and you must treat it as holy. 33 Anyone who makes a blend like it or anoints someone other than a priest will be cut off from the community.’”

Footnotes:

30:23 Hebrew 500 [shekels] [5.7 kilograms] of pure myrrh, 250 [shekels] [2.9 kilograms] of fragrant cinnamon, 250 [shekels] of fragrant calamus. 30:24a Hebrew 500 [shekels] [5.7 kilograms] of cassia. 30:24b Hebrew 1 hin [3.8 liters] of olive oil.

    Mindy's precious legs

Dear Friends,

Aloha. I have received a personal testimony about the holy anointing oil that is so touching and so real that I want you to know about it. The  people whose story this is don't have a computer, however they have promised to send me a written copy of their testimony. As soon as it arrives I will post it here for you all to enjoy. Until then, this is what I know:

I heard from Robert H. of Lahaina, Maui about a month ago with a very sad story. His sweet girlfriend, Mindy was in terrible pain and discomfort and wanted to die. She was on multiple pharmaceutical prescriptions, the strongest pain-killing kind, and yet the only remedy that gave her comfort was smoking cannabis. They had no money as every month they spent all of their small income on rent, some food and her medicines.

I connected Robert with my partner in healing sacrament on Maui. He was able to deliver some flowers to them a couple of times for free. It was a blessing and gave Mindy some well-deserved comfort. Still, her condition worsened and she wanted to die to escape the misery, the pain and the poverty.

Apparently diabeties has taken a terrible toll on her, and both of Mindy's legs were green and black and there were holes in her skin all the way to the bone. She was scheduled to have her legs amputated last week as there was no hope, according to her doctors.

When I heard this story I immediately sent Robert and Mindy a bottle of holy anointing oil with THC Ministry membership and ordainment papers for both of them. Now for the good news:

I heard back from Robert last week and he said that a miracle has happened! Get this; the holy anointing oil has caused new skin to grow on Mindy's legs! They both tell me that the skin is now fresh, pink and healthy after applying just ten drops - three times per day to her legs. A visit to the doctor last Wednesday was joyous instead of tragic. Instead of making arrangements for amputation, the doctor was completely amazed and surprised.

Yesterday I spoke with Mindy and she was HAPPY! I could feel the smile in her voice and the will to live back in her life now. Both Robert and Mindy are on a healing path and are praying and working for 'full recovery'. Apparently the healing has been so dramatic that at this rate they hope and expect Mindy to be up and possibly out of her wheelchair in a week or two.

I must say that this is a 'chicken-skin' story to tell you. It is the latest in our miracle testimonies and is my pleasure to pass along. I must say that I am drawn-in closer and closer to the Bible as we get blessings with the holy oil recipe of Exodus 30:23. There is something miraculous in this formula and it's being proven, day after day, by Lilli and Kate and Meghan and now Mindy. We also have another special holy oil testimony coming in the next few days that I know about. Have I missed anyone else?

Please remind me if I have.

What can I say? Mahalo ke akua. Hallelujah!!!!

Much love and respect to one and all,

Roger

I met Mindy and I saw her precious legs.

Hello everyone,

Aloha. I just returned from four terrific days and nights on Maui. One of the most special things I did was to visit Mindy and her devoted lover Robert, and I got to see Mindy's legs; her precious, pink-skinned, almost fully-healed legs! It was a sight to see and a visit to remember. What nice people, too.

Mindy told me that her doctor called her (previous) condition, the 'never-healing disease'. Can you imagine? I suggest that if you ever hear that kind of negativity from your doctor that you get another doctor immediately!

We visited for over an hour and had a fine time together, including tears and laughter. I even got a few revealing photographs, including one of Mindy standing outside on the lawn in the yard. That might not sound very dramatic ... until you know that Mindy has not stood on her own legs in over three years. :-}

All the very best to you,

Roger

What an amazing story. Do we have their Doctors name and address? Have we gotten any kind of testimony/report/opinion letter from this Doctor? I think we should. I think The healing power of our Sacrament is something we need to focus on more strongly. Who can argue about our legitiment sincerity if we have proof of our intent and ABILITY to heal? Nobody I think.

Great news, I hope she continues to improve and that her life if free of this disease soon.

Peace

Who is Prohibited to Make or Use the Holy Anointing Oil?

Anointing oil is one the few tangible elements used in the Old Testament which was carried over for use into the New Testament (James 5:14, Mark 16:13). A very descriptive recipe of how to make the Holy Anointing Oil can be found in the 30th chapter of Exodus.

However much ignorance and fear of the prohibition in this chapter have prevented many capable believers from using it.

Is it indeed prohibited for believers to make and/or to use? Who has the right to use this sacred substance?

It was forbidden to be used on an “outsider” or to be used as an emollient on the body of any common persons and the children of Israel were forbidden to duplicate any like it for themselves.

In this article we will attempt to discover who, in this modern age, is permitted to be anointed with this most precious oil.

Let us take a closer look at the instructions for the manufacturing and use of the Holy Anointing Oil in Exodus 30. God gives TWO messages to TWO different groups of people in this chapter concerning the anointing oil. Not knowing which messages pertains to which group has been the source of much confusion in the past.

The first message (or set of instructions) is given for Moses and the priesthood (all that minister in any priestly capacity). This message begins in verse 22 and ends in verse 30.

The second message (or set of instructions) is given to the children of Israel. This message begins in verse 31 and ends in verse 33.

I. The first message, which is for Moses and the priesthood, gives the following information:

  1. The recipe for the Holy Anointing Oil (vs. 23,24).
  2. How to make the Holy Anointing Oil (vs. 25).
  3. That all the articles of the mishkan are to be anointed with it 26-28).
  4. The degrees of holiness in using the oil (vs. 29).
  5. That all the priesthood is to be anointed with it (vs. 30).

II. The second message, which is for the children of Israel only, gives the following information:

  1. The message is for the children of Israel (vs. 31 a).
  2. This is a holy anointing oil for all generations (vs.31 b).
  3. It is prohibited to be poured upon a common man’s flesh (vs. 32 a).
  4. The common people of Israel are forbidden to make any other like it for themselves (vs. 32 b).
  5. If the common people of Israel make any other like it and put it upon a stranger then he shall be cut off from his people (vs. 33).

In the first message we are told that the oil is to be used on the priests (vs.30).

In the second message we are told not to pour it upon man’s flesh (vs. 32).

This seems to be a direct contradiction. First it is to be poured on man and then he says it is not to be poured on man. However the very next verse makes it much plainer revealing the prohibition being putting “it upon a stranger.” The NIV translated this last statement as “whoever puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from his people.”

The ESV makes it much clearer:

“32 It shall not be poured on the body of an ordinary person, and you shall make no other like it in composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you.

33 Whoever compounds any like it or whoever puts any of it on an outsider shall be cut off from his people.”

Gill’s Exposition of the Bible comments “Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured,…. That is, not upon common men, or on men’s flesh in common, as was usual at feasts and entertainments in the eastern countries, see Psalm 23:5 but this was not to be used on such occasions, otherwise it was poured on the flesh of some men, as Aaron and his sons, on whose head it was poured and ran down to the beard.”

Notice that the prohibition to “make any other like it” is directed toward the common children of Israel and NOT to the priesthood.

The prohibition says:

  1. It is a Holy Anointing oil ONLY to be used by the priesthood.
  2. Not to make any LIKE it (not referring to making the holy anointing oil, but a counterfeit).
  3. It is not to be made by the common children of Israel (made by priesthood only).
  4. It is not to be poured upon a common person.

We discover God does not want common man to make any of his divine recipes “for yourselves” for the purpose of enjoying “to smell thereto” (Ex. 30. 37,38).

Again in summery, It was forbidden to be used on an outsider or to be used as an emollient on the body of any common persons and the children of Israel were forbidden to duplicate any like it for themselves.

Originally the oil was used exclusively for the priesthood and the Tabernacle articles but was later extended to include prophets and kings.

Are believers still “strangers” to God? No we are not . . . we have been “grafted in.” As Paul writes we are no longer an “alien” or “stranger” to God’s family but we can call upon the LORD God of Israel as our own (Ephesians 2:12).

“But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God” (Romans 2:29).

But who are the priests today which have the right to use this oil?

Today we live under a new covenant. The Word says,

“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2: 5 )

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (I Peter 2:9)

“And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen” (Revelations 1:6).

“And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:10).

We are a chosen people and a chosen generation who have been made “a royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9).

Although there may be different levels of development, every born again believer is a minister. Jesus is the fulfillment of every type and shadow of the Tabernacle of Moses. Had Jesus not come we would never put our hand to this most sacred oil, however, he has become our High Priest after the order of Melchizedek (although in the physical he did have the Cohanim, or Aaronic, priestly bloodline through his mother Mary, who was cousin to Elizabeth, who was “of the sons of Aaron” ) and we have been made a holy priesthood who follow after.

It is our incredible blessing to use the Holy Anointing Oil for purposes of consecration. It is every born again believers great commission to take this gospel to all of the world.

As a royal priesthood of born again believers we have the right to use the Holy Anointing Oil. But the prohibition still stands that it should not be used on those which are not born again ( a stranger, common, not of the spiritual children of Israel). Olive oil scented with myrrh alone or some other spice may be used for anointing those who are not yet born again. However, the holy oil of Exodus 30 is for special consecration only for born again believers and only by born again consecrators.

“And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office. And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations (Ex. 30:30,31).”

The Caduceus

The caduceus  (/k?'du?si?s/, -??s, -'dju?-; kerykeion in Greek) or Wand of Hermes is typically depicted as a short herald's staff entwined by two serpentine creatures - these are alternatively thought to depict two worms, or else two snakes - in the form of a double helix, and sometimes surmounted by wings. In later Antiquity the caduceus was an astrological symbol of commerce and in Roman iconography was often depicted being carried in the left hand of Greek god Hermes, the messenger for the gods, conductor of the dead and protector of merchants and thieves.

The caduceus has come to be used as a symbol for medicine, especially in North America, by confusion with the traditional medical symbol, the rod of Asclepius, which has only a single snake and no wings.

Origin
The distant origin of the symbol adopted by the Greeks was Mesopotamian, as has been known since the discovery of Gudea's green steatite libation vase of c. 2144-24 BCE from Lagash, conserved at the Musée du Louvre; it represents the serpent-god Ningishzida, messenger of the goddess Ishtar and awakener of vegetation after the annual killing drought.

Among the Greeks it was originally a herald's staff, sometime surmounted with wings, with two white fillets of wool attached to it. The view of Karl Otfried Müller, that the ribbons eventually "evolved into" snakes, was held for several generations of conservative mythographers, though Jane Ellen Harrison correctly detected that Hermes had originated in snake-form and that the snakes were essential to the caduceus, even though she was unaware of the Near Eastern connections. The Greek myth of origin of the staff is part of the story of Tiresias, who found two snakes copulating and killed the female with his staff. Tiresias was immediately turned into a woman, and so remained until he was able to repeat the act with the male snake seven years later. This staff later came in to the possession of the god Hermes, along with its transformative powers.

In Rome, Livy refers to the caduceator who negotiated peace arrangements under the diplomatic protection of the caduceus he carried.

Meaning
The meaning, purpose, and esoteric meaning of the caduceus can often be interpreted from the sum of its parts. The staff (particularly the herald's staff) was a symbol of authority carried in the hands of messengers. The winged quality of the wand of Hermes is in keeping with the alchemical or astrological importance of Mercury (whether taken to mean the planet, god, and element), quite often denoting fluidity, transformation, information, and new beginnings (as the elemental quarter of air is often likened to). The snake is often depicted in non Judeo-Christian traditions as a source or deliverer of wisdom. In Gnosticism the serpent represents Sophia or the manifestation of principles of the feminine divine (or Shekinah in the Judaism or Kabbalah). Note that the snakes are bound to each other in a double helix - a shape of stability, creation, and life (notably, the shape of the DNA); interesting this follows the arrangement that King Cobras take, fighting upright, face to face, trying to submit the other for sexual rights.

In this it can be seen that the caduceus represents the authority to quickly deliver vital information or wisdom to aid, assist and enlighten. It is no surprise then that the caduceus is used by a variety of professions who have a connection with Hermes or Mercury in his traditional roles as the the god of commerce, eloquence, invention, travel and thievery. Contemporary users of this symbol include merchants, journalists, and postal workers.

In the Hermetic Tradition, the caduceus is a symbol of spiritual awakening, and has been likened to the Kundalini serpents of Hindu mysticism .

Variations
In some vase paintings ancient depictions of the Greek kerykeion are radically different from the modern representation. These representations feature the two snakes atop the staff (rod), crossed to create a circle with the heads of the snakes resembling horns. This old graphic form, with an additional crossbar to the staff, has become the typographical Mercury-sign widely used in astrological and alchemistic contexts for centuries. Another simplified variant of the caduceus is to be found in dictionaries, indicating “commercial term”: the staff with two winglets attached, the snakes omitted (or reduced to a small ring in the middle).

Confusion with the rod of Asclepius

Rod of Asclepius

The caduceus is sometimes used as a symbol for medicine or doctors (instead of the rod of Asclepius) even though there is no connection with Hippocrates or the Greeks; its singularly inappropriate connotations of theft and commerce have provided fodder for academic humor. A 1992 survey of American health organisations found that 62% of professional associations used the rod of  Asclepius, whereas in commercial organisations, 76% used the caduceus.

The first recorded use of the caduceus in a medical context was in the printer's vignette used by Johann Frobenius, who used the staff entwined with serpents, not winged but surmounted by doves, with the biblical epigraph "Be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves" A silver caduceus presented to Caius College, Cambridge by John Caius and carried before him on the cushion he supplied in official visits to the college remains in the College's possession. Early confusion between the symbols almost certainly arose due to the links between alchemy and Hermes, whose symbol is the caduceus. The alchemists adopted the caduceus because Hermes, the God of Messengers, was also the patron lord of gamblers, thieves, tricksters and alchemists. By the end of  the 16th century, alchemy became widely associated with medicine in some areas, leading to some use of the caduceus as a medical symbol.

The main reason for the confusion over the medical use of the caduceus occurred in the United States in the 19th century, with its use by the United States Army, made official in 1902. It had appeared on the chevrons of Army hospital stewards as early as 1856. This was brought about by one Captain Reynolds, who after having the idea rejected several times by the Surgeon General, persuaded the new incumbent —Brig. Gen. William H. Forwood — to adopt it. The inconsistency was noticed several years later by the librarian to the Surgeon General, but was not changed. In 1901 the French periodical of  military medicine was named La Caducée. The caduceus was formally adopted by the Medical Department of the United States Army in 1902. After World War I the caduceus was employed as an emblem by both the Army Medical Department and the Navy Hospital Corps.

There was further confusion caused by the use of the caduceus as a printer's mark (as Hermes was the god of eloquence and messengers), which appeared in many medical textbooks as a printing mark, although subsequently mistaken for a medical ymbol.

Examples of usage

  • The caduceus is the official magazine of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. The symbol (with a slight difference) appears on the Order's pledge pin and crest.
  •
  • Columbia Business School uses a logo derived from the caduceus symbol. they   also have other references to the Greek god Hermes including an alumni  magazine.
  •
  • The caduceus is used in the coat of arms of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.
  •
